Unveiling the beautiful God of Scripture Mark Dowling is studying in our London GDip Learning Community. He tells us about his experience and favourite lessons so far. I was instantly struck by Union’s high prioritisation of the gospel and its role in stirring worship and missionI currently work as a music teacher for Bromley Youth Music Trust, giving lessons in piano and music theory. As well as this I’m a director of music at Christ Church Anerley where I lead the sung worship for Sunday services and encouraging other young musicians to serve in the church. I came to study at the Union Learning Community in London because of a deep-seated desire to go deeper in my walk with Jesus and understanding of scripture.I was instantly struck by Union’s high prioritisation of the gospel and its role in stirring worship and mission. This emphasis persuaded me to apply for the Graduate Diploma (GDip). The GDip course has helped me to meet some great people (mentors included!) and enriched my devotional life through the unveiling of the beautiful God of scripture. My favourite part of the programme so far has been the Old Testament module, where we examined key scholarly debates and important principles in interpreting the message the Old testament portrays. Particularly interesting was the discussion of purity laws in Leviticus and their significance in conveying God as the God of life and wholeness. His people are a people who are made whole in His holy presence. The GDip course has enriched my devotional life through the unveiling of the beautiful God of scripture. My hope is that studying on the GDip will enable me to teach God’s truth in an accurate, transformative and innovative manner, either through song or through any teaching or preaching opportunities that arise. I’m still praying for guidance for the future, but I know the friends I have made in my Learning Community will be a support, anchor and mine of wisdom as I pursue my studies and seek God’s will for future ministry.
